Yvonne Smith shares her experience of working with the Ministry of Social Services.
By Yvonne Smith, MPA Student and executive internAs a mature international student with work experience spanning both private and public sectors, participating in the JSGS Executive Internship Program has been thrilling.
I am interning with the Ministry of Social Services, under the mentorship of Martina Buchanan, Director, Strategic Management Branch.
My role involves consulting with individuals across government and the Ministry of Social Services to support the development of a corporate orientation project.
So far, I have had the opportunity to participate in data collection (interviews), qualitative analysis, reporting, and synthesizing recommendations for ministry leadership. I also attend meetings at various levels of the organization including the executive, director, managers, branch, unit, etc. to learn how the ministry functions in executing its mandate and serving the residents of Saskatchewan.
This experience has provided me with valuable insights into government operations in Canada, the ministry’s mandate, and the opportunity to contribute to policy-related initiatives.
The internship allows me to connect classroom learning with real-world practice and enhance my skills in teamwork and collaboration as I engage with diverse perspectives.
Observing effective leadership practices has inspired me to adopt a proactive approach to navigating challenges. Additionally, I am developing a deeper understanding of cultural and individual differences, which is helping me refine my interpersonal skills and increase my self-awareness.
Overall, the executive internship is a rewarding journey of personal and professional growth. It is equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue future work opportunities in public administration or related fields.
