Taylor Rieger, MPA candidate, is currently interning under the guidance of Christa Ross, Assistant Deputy Minister, Immigration, Employment and Career Development.
By Taylor Rieger, MPA student and executive internMy name is Taylor Rieger and I am an executive intern at the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training. My mentor is Christa Ross, Assistant Deputy Minister, Immigration, Employment and Career Development. My main work focuses in foreign qualification recognition which is the process by which individuals who have worked in regulated occupations or trades in other countries become licensed to work in that occupation or trade in Saskatchewan.
My work at the ministry primarily involves communicating with regulators in the province to review their pathways to licensure, gap training programs and alternate career paths. It also requires researching regulated occupations, conducting jurisdictional scans and working with other provinces and the federal government. I also work on contracts with regulators or training institutions that provide innovative assessment and training processes so that internationally trained individuals can become licensed in Saskatchewan.
The internship has given me insight into the inner-workings of a ministry and the relationships between various governments. I think that only so much can be learned in the classroom and having the opportunity to supplement my education with experiential learning is a valuable experience.
